Tech multi-megatrend ETF evolves methodology with addition of quantum computing and defence tech exposures
When you invest in ETFs your capital is at risk.
September 2025, London
HANetf, Europe’s first and leading white-label UCITS ETF and ETC platform,[2] is delighted to announce that HAN-GINS Tech Megatrend Equal Weight UCITS ETF (ticker: ITEK) has seen an evolution of its index methodology to include Defence Technology and Quantum Computing as subthemes.
The ETF, launched in 2018, aims to provide exposure to the disruptive companies that are changing the world through global megatrends. Innovative technological trends can change over time, and new ones can arise-updating the methodology ensures that some of the world’s most technologically advanced companies can be a part of the index. The aim of ITEK is to be one-stop-shop for technology themes, negating the need for investors to have to choose specific and narrow themes. ITEK can be a core holding in a portfolio due to its diversification and coverage of most major technology themes.
Defence Technology has seen rapid growth, driven in part by growing geopolitical tensions and historic increases in defence spending, from Europe to the Indo-Pacific.
But at the same time, the nature of defence has changed – technology has become even more central to defence, especially when it comes to AI, cyberwarfare, satellites, and drones. Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has particularly highlighted the importance of cyber defence – a threat that was relatively underestimated until recently, and a market that is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 16.1% through to 2032 to reach $63.38 billion.[3]
Meanwhile, Quantum Computing is emerging as an area that could transform fields such as AI, medicine, finance, and data analytics. Its theoretical ability to solve complex problems at unparalleled speeds could prove to be revolutionary, but the technology is still in its infancy – meaning that the growth potential could be significant.
According to McKinsey, the Quantum Computing market could grow from $4 billion in 2024 to as much as $72 billion by 2035.[4]
Following the update to the index methodology, the ETF now has 10 subthemes:
At rebalance, each of the subthemes are allocated equal weight – and the companies within them are also equal weighted, creating a “double diversification” approach. This avoids concentration in larger stocks, such as the “Mag 7”.
ITEK also takes a global approach, and does not limit constituents to one region or country. The aim is to offer access to smaller, global companies that may better contribute to the ETF’s performance.
Since inception, the ETF has accumulated $115.25 million in assets under management (AUM).[5]
Anthony Ginsberg, CEO of GinsGlobal Index Funds, commented: “We’re excited to be adding two new subthemes to the ITEK ETF. The ETF’s equal weighting approach allows it to provide exposure to a globally diverse portfolio of tech constituents, while reducing concentration risk.
“The inclusion of Defence Technology and Quantum Computing reflects our ongoing commitment to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to technological innovation. These are transformative areas that we believe will play a central role in shaping the future of both enterprise and national infrastructure. By evolving the index to incorporate these themes, we’re ensuring that investors can access a broader spectrum of disruptive technologies within a single, balanced vehicle.”
Hector McNeil, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of HANetf, commented: “We’re delighted to be evolving the HAN-GINS Tech Megatrend Equal Weight UCITS ETF (ticker: ITEK) with the addition of two new exciting subthemes, Defence Technology and Quantum Computing. The ETF has always been designed to capture the leading technological megatrends, so it is important that it can adapt when new sectors emerge. It also means that the rebalance of the themes “takes money” off the table from themes that have outperformed and reinvests back into themes that lagged, and could be next to pop. This reduces the need for investors to pick the winning themes and also decreases the chance of missing a theme by picking individual theme ETFs.
“ITEK was the second ETF to launch on the HANetf platform, and it is great to see it continue to innovate – we are committed to working closely with our partners to ensure that our range of products are well positioned to capture their respective themes.”
