Making Europe Great Again ETF – Key Takeaways

The Resurgence of Manufacturing – A recent research study by the Capgemini Institute analysed how organisations are balancing resilience, investment and industrial competitiveness regarding manufacturing and supply chain strategies in the world’s increasingly volatile environment. Since 2024, repeated supply chain disruptions from pandemic-related impacts to the current situation in the Middle East have accelerated a shift from short-term cost efficiency and convenience toward resilience, sovereignty and strategic control.[1] In 2026, nearly three-quarters of organisations have a reindustrialisation strategy in place with the following key takeaways.[2]

  • Reindustrialisation intent remains high, but capital investment is increasingly selective, favouring more capital-efficient approaches rather than broad reshoring initiatives.
  • Europe and the US are taking divergent paths with the US driving domestic production with trade policy like tariffs and non-US investment, and Europe, faced with higher energy prices, labour costs, and fragmented regulation are pushing organisations toward “friendshoring”. Friendshoring, or ally shoring, is a strategic trade practice where countries limit supply chain risks by manufacturing and sourcing essential components, such as semiconductors and green tech, from reliable geopolitical allies.
  • New global manufacturing hubs are gaining prominence with most organisations taking a pragmatic approach toward China, rather than abandoning them entirely, but looking to rebalance and reconfigure their supply chains elsewhere, increasing their presence in India, Vietnam, Mexico, and Canada.
  • Technology remains a critical enabler of efficiency. AI, generative AI, digital twins, automation, robotics, Industrial Internet of Things, and edge computing are improving productivity, flexibility, and resilience, particularly in tech-intensive greenfield factories. However, shortages of skilled industrial and digital talent are limiting scale.[3]

EU Grants €600 Million for Cross-Border Energy Infrastructure– The EU Commission has launched a call for new proposals for key cross-border EU energy infrastructure projects. Organised by the Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), this is the first call open for projects included on the second list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs). Linked to the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy (CEF Energy), the call relates to funding proposals for studies and for construction works and will be open until 30 September 2026. During a new energy crisis, strengthening energy systems and integrating markets is increasingly important in order to bring down energy costs, improve industrial competitiveness, and integrate home-grown renewable solutions. This initiative follows the EU Grids Package established last December, to create a set of measures to accommodate rapidly growing renewable generation and rising electricity demand from end-use sectors such as vehicle charging.[4] [5]

TINA Revival Sidelining TIARA Trade – The US-Iran ceasefire has re-sparked interest in US stocks, known as There is no alternative (TINA) as opposed to the There is a real alternative (TIARA) trade, due to renewed optimism for extended peace, strong US earnings, and the economy’s greater energy resilience. Investors previously focused on cheaper overseas markets, attracted by a weaker dollar, have shifted focus back to the US.[6] Prior to the ceasefire, there was significant withdrawal from US stocks, totalling a net outflow of $56 billion for the year. Post-ceasefire, there has been a noticeable reduction in investment in European and Asian markets, with a report from Bank of America indicating that South Korean funds have seen record outflows and European stocks have experienced their largest outflows since late 2024.[7] Although US equities still show a cumulative net outflow of $30 billion for 2026, the pace of outflows has decreased. For the first quarter, S&P 500 earnings are expected to grow nearly +14%, while European earnings are projected to rise by only +4.2%. Comparatively, the VettaFi Developed Europe 500 Index is up +4.2% for the year versus the VettaFi US 500 Index, up +6.5%. However, the VettaFi Making Europe Great Again Index, focused on the industrial resurgence of Europe, is up +18.3% for the year, with the underlying portfolio of names demonstrating much stronger earnings growth.[8] [9]

Macro Outlook – U.S Testing European Resolve

The European industrial renaissance is a strategic transformation underway. Aimed at modernising industry through digital, green, and high-tech initiatives, it focuses on strengthening defence capabilities, manufacturing, supply chains, and Net Zero clean energy technologies to boost global growth and competitiveness. The industrial renaissance is driven by the need for scalable technological solutions such as digital infrastructure, AI, cloud computing, and smart manufacturing to support more efficient production processes. Europe’s non-participation in direct offensive military operations during the US-Iran war has generated further friction between the two allies, further justifying Europe’s efforts toward autonomy and strategic self-determination. Will Europe be able to overcome its technological gap and the potential need to replace over $1 trillion in lost funding from a U.S. exit?[10]  The companies at the forefront of this change will become key investment beneficiaries.
