Travel ETF Report | December 2024

Travel ETF Key Takeaways

Thanksgiving travel by air, boat and car is expected to hit pre-pandemic levels and break records across the board, AAA reported on November 18. This year’s projection of nearly 80 million travellers is an increase of 1.7 million people compared to last year and 2 million more than in 2019.

In 2024 the State Department has broken annual U.S. passport processing records for the third consecutive fiscal year by issuing approximately 24.5 million passport books and cards – half a million more than last year’s record-breaking totals. That is also an 18% jump compared to 2019.

Barclays sees airline fundamentals “turning sharply positive” in 2025, reports TipRanks, and likely to drive a “much more favorable market perception for the group,” potentially affording meaningful share price appreciation for the industry leaders Delta, United and Alaska.

Macro Outlook

Shoppers in the U.S. are aware of Black Friday (the day after the Thanksgiving holiday), but the latest entrant in this category is “Travel Tuesday,” explains McKinsey. This is a day on which shoppers can find deals on travel purchases such as hotel stays or airline flights. Travel industry players can potentially benefit from paying close attention to this burgeoning phenomenon—which, in 2024, will occur on Tuesday, December 3—by finding ways to shape relevant promotions and campaigns around it.

Bucket list travel is up despite rising travel costs, and older generations with more disposable income will be traveling more frequently in 2025, reports Yahoo! Finance. Over 80% of travellers taking trips next year will be 45 years old and over, according to an outlook from Squaremouth, up 11% compared to 2024. The number of travellers under 44 planning trips has decreased by 17% year over year.
