Travel ETF Key Takeaways

The 2024 State of the Cruise Industry Report (originally released earlier this year by the Cruise Lines International Association), highlighted that cruise tourism reached 107% of 2019 levels in 2023, with 31.7 million passengers sailing (almost 2 million more than 2019). By the end of 2024, it is forecast that the industry will see 35.7 cruise passengers sailing. In addition, global cruise capacity is forecast to grow from 677,000 lower berths in 2024 to 745,000 lower berths in 2028.

Booking Holdings – one of the best-known international travel platforms – remains a leader in the travel industry, according to analysts on SeekingAlpha.com. Despite a rise in competitors like Airbnb, Booking remains the most popular platform, with significant market share and advanced AI technology driving consumer decisions, the article explains. Booking’s forward P/E ratio of 24 is attractive compared to the S&P 500, offering high annual EPS growth and sustainable dividends and share buybacks.

Royal Caribbean Cruises stock has hit an all-time high of $207.05, reports Investing.com. Over the past year, Royal Caribbean has seen an impressive 147.7% change in its stock price, reflecting investor confidence and a bullish outlook on the company’s ability to rebound from the challenges posed by global travel restrictions.

Macro Outlook

Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines are reportedly in talks to merge, reports Travel and Leisure, making it the fifth largest U.S. airline by seats. The airline would even be larger than Alaska Airlines after its recently approved merger with Hawaiian Airlines. It would serve 115 cities, including 24 international destinations.

At the end of October, Boeing announced a $19 billion capital raise, reports MarketWatch. This was more than expected and includes a $14 billion public offering of common shares. Bondholders cheered the news, and the stock ultimately reversed lower following the news.
