Nach der COP28 hat sich die Welt offiziell dazu verpflichtet, sich von fossilen Brennstoffen zu verabschieden. Was jedoch weitgehend fehlte, war die Anerkennung der enormen Nachfrage, die dies für eine Vielzahl kritischer Metalle mit sich bringen wird.
Im Kern bedeutet der Übergang zu einer kohlenstoffarmen Wirtschaft auch den Übergang zu einer metallintensiven Wirtschaft – sei es für die Erzeugung erneuerbarer Energien, deren Speicherung oder den Ausbau der Übertragungsnetze.
Nehmen wir Kupfer: Im Jahr 2020 waren laut Goldman Sachs lediglich 4 % des Kupferverbrauchs mit der Dekarbonisierung verbunden. Bis 2030 soll dieser Anteil auf 17 % steigen. Infolgedessen wird erwartet, dass die jährliche Kupfernachfrage bis 2030 auf 60 Millionen Tonnen ansteigt – gegenüber 25 Millionen Tonnen heute.
Doch es wird eine ganze Reihe von Metallen benötigt. Lithium ist essenziell für Batterien, Elektrofahrzeuge und zukünftige großskalige Speicherlösungen, die es ermöglichen, schwankende erneuerbare Energiequellen zuverlässig zu machen. Silber ist ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil von Solarmodulen. Seltene Erden sind notwendig für die Nutzung von Windenergie.
Tatsächlich sehen wir bereits, wie diese Nachfrage Druck auf die Preise einzelner Metalle ausübt – etwa bei Uran. Der Uranpreis stieg im Jahr 2023 deutlich an, was auf zunehmende Sorgen über ein begrenztes Angebot nach einem Jahrzehnt der Unterinvestitionen im Uransektor zurückzuführen ist.
Dieser Preisdruck könnte anhalten, da die Kernenergie eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle bei der Dekarbonisierung einnimmt. Das primäre Angebot aus Uranminen bleibt deutlich hinter der Nachfrage zurück, mit einem prognostizierten kumulierten Angebotsdefizit von rund 1,5 Milliarden Pfund bis 2040. Und diese Prognose entstand noch vor den Zusagen von COP28, die eine Verdreifachung der globalen Kernenergiekapazität vorsehen.
Angesichts der steigenden Nachfrage nach all diesen Metallen – von Kupfer über seltene Erden bis hin zu Uran – dürften die Unternehmen, die diese Rohstoffe fördern, profitieren. Historisch gesehen haben Bergbauunternehmen in Haussephasen von Metallen wie Uran oder Kupfer häufig die Rohstoffpreise selbst übertroffen.
